Haiti’s government has taken decisive action in response to the recent surge in violence following a brazen attack by a gang on the main prison in the capital city.
This assault resulted in the escape of thousands of inmates, exacerbating an already precarious security situation.
In a statement released on Sunday, the government announced a state of emergency and imposed a nighttime curfew from 6:00 pm to 5:00 am, effective immediately until Wednesday, March 6th.

These measures are specifically targeted at the Ouest region, encompassing the capital, Port-au-Prince, and may be extended if deemed necessary.
The primary objective of these actions is to restore order and regain control of the escalating situation. Economy Minister Patrick Michel Boisvert, acting as the country’s prime minister, underscored the urgency of the situation by signing the statement.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who was absent during the announcement, had recently traveled to Kenya to finalize an agreement.
This agreement entails the deployment of police forces from Kenya to lead a United Nations-backed mission aimed at restoring law and order in Haiti, which has been plagued by gang violence.
