Kenya’s Chief of Defence Forces Francis Ogolla Killed in Helicopter Crash

President William Ruto announced the death of Chief of Defence Forces Francis Ogolla in a helicopter crash on Thursday afternoon. 

In his evening press conference, President Ruto confirmed that the military chopper went down in the Sindar area of Elgeyo Marakwet County at around 2:20 p.m.

“At 2:20 p.m. today, our nation experienced a tragic air accident in the Sindar area, Keben location, Tot division, of Elgeyo Marakwet County,” the President stated. “I am deeply saddened to report the passing of General Francis Omondi Ogolla, the Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces.”

The President also announced that the helicopter was carrying 11 other military officers, nine of whom perished in the crash alongside General Ogolla. Two survivors were reported from the incident.

  • Colonel Duncan Keittany
  • Lieutenant Colonel David Sawe
  • Major George Benson Magondu (Pilot)
  • Captain Sora Mohamed
  • Captain Hillary Litali
  • Senior Sergeant John Kinyua Mureithi
  • Sergeant Cliphonce Omondi
  • Sergeant Rose Nyawira
