A delegation of 24 Kenyan athletes is poised to depart on Wednesday for the Bahamas, where they will partake in the World Relays Championships scheduled for May 4-5. 

This global event serves as a crucial platform for athletes to secure qualifications for the upcoming Paris Olympics, drawing the participation of 893 athletes representing 54 nations.

Among the Kenyan contingent, African 100m record holder Ferdinand Omanyala will spearhead the men’s 4x100m team, comprising talents such as Mark Otieno, Meshack Babu, Samuel Chege, Mike Mokamba, and Hesbon Ochieng.

Meanwhile, the country’s 4x400m team will be led by World 800m champion Mary Moraa, supported by a formidable lineup including Mercy Chebet, Jackline Nanjala, Joan Cherono, Veronica Mutua, Vanice Kerubo, Maureen Thomas, Gladys Chepkemboi, and Diana Chebet.

Not to be overlooked, the men’s 4x400m team boasts a strong assembly featuring Zablon Ekwam, Wiseman Were, David Sanayek, Boniface Mweresa, Brian Tenaga, Moitalel Nokila, Kelvin Kipkorir, Nathaniel Kipngetich, and Kennedy Kimeu. 

With the Olympic qualifying standards set at 48.70 for the 400m hurdles and 45.00 for the 400m dash, the stakes are high for these athletes as they strive to meet and surpass these benchmarks.

The competition promises intense showdowns, with 32 teams vying for supremacy in the men’s 4x100m event and 30 in the women’s division. In the men’s 4x400m, 32 teams will clash for victory, while 27 teams will contend in the women’s category.

Additionally, 30 teams are slated to compete in the mixed relay, adding further excitement to the event.

As anticipation mounts, start lists will be unveiled on May 3, offering fans a glimpse into the upcoming battles.
