Star athlete Beatrice Chebet has been named the LG/SJAK Sports Personality of the Month (SPOM) for August 2024, following her remarkable performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Chebet secured two gold medals in the women’s 5,000m and 10,000m races, making history as the first Kenyan woman to achieve such a feat at her debut Summer Games. This marks the fifth time Chebet has won the SPOM award.

The 24-year-old triumphed in the 10,000m race with a time of 30:43.25 at the Stade de France, just four days after clinching the 5,000m gold.

In the 5,000m event, Chebet became only the second Kenyan woman to win, following Vivian Cheruiyot’s 2016 Rio Olympics victory.

Her winning time of 14:28.56 came in a dramatic race that saw three-time 1,500m Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon briefly disqualified before being reinstated to claim the silver with a season-best time of 14:29.60.

LG East Africa Managing Director Dongwon Lee praised Chebet’s performance, expressing confidence that this recognition would inspire her to continue breaking records and motivate other athletes to follow in her footsteps.

“Chebet’s Olympic performance was nothing short of outstanding, and we are certain she will continue to impress on the global stage,” Lee stated.

The decision between Chebet and Kipyegon for the SPOM award was challenging, especially as Kipyegon became the first Kenyan to win back-to-back 1,500m Olympic titles, setting a new Olympic record of 3:51.29.

Other nominees included Emmanuel Wanyonyi, who secured Kenya’s fifth consecutive 800m Olympic gold, and KCB Rugby Halfback Emmanuel Opondo, who helped his team claim their third Kabereri Sevens title.

Harambee Starlets and Kenya Police Bullets FC goalkeeper, Annedy Kundu, was also nominated after her outstanding performance in the 2024 CECAFA Women’s Challenge Cup, where she was named the most valuable player.

Cricket player Kreeshna Mehta and World U-20 5,000m champion Andrew Alamisi were among the other notable nominees.

SJAK President James Waindi congratulated Chebet and encouraged all nominees to continue striving for excellence in their respective sports disciplines.
