Kenya Airports Authority announces closure of JKIA’s Terminal 1E

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi will temporarily close Terminal 1E starting Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 7:00 a.m., according to an announcement from the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA).

The closure is part of ongoing rehabilitation works aimed at improving the terminal’s infrastructure and enhancing the overall passenger experience.

As part of these upgrades, all airlines that typically operate from Terminal 1E, including major international carriers like Qatar Airways, British Airways, and Emirates, will be relocated to Terminal 1A.

KAA has assured travelers that this adjustment is designed to minimize inconvenience while prioritizing passenger safety and comfort.

This move follows recent issues at JKIA, including reports of leaking roofs and electrical faults that led to temporary shutdowns earlier this year.

In response, the Kenyan government initiated plans for significant upgrades, with former Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen previously stating that Terminal 1E would eventually be decommissioned once a new arrival terminal is completed.

These upgrades are part of broader efforts to modernize JKIA, a vital hub for regional and international air travel.

Passengers traveling during the closure are advised to arrive early to allow ample time for check-in and processing at the alternate terminal.

As one of Africa’s leading international airports, JKIA plays a crucial role in Kenya’s economy, handling millions of passengers annually and providing employment to thousands.

The planned improvements are expected to further boost its capacity and strengthen its global reputation.
