Popular city car dealer Joseph Kairo Wambui, commonly known as Khalif Kairo, was rearrested on Tuesday moments after attending a court hearing for another ongoing case. Videos captured at the scene showed Kairo being escorted to a police vehicle shortly after leaving the courtroom.

Kairo is accused of receiving payment for an SUV but failing to deliver the vehicle to the buyer. Earlier this month, he was charged with defrauding two clients of Ksh.2.1 million and Ksh.2.9 million, respectively.

According to the prosecution, Kairo deceived Jeff Kyule Munane between July 10 and July 29, 2024, in Westlands, Nairobi.

His company, Kai & Karo Limited, allegedly collected Ksh.2,145,150 under the pretense of importing a Honda Vezel Hybrid from Japan, which was never delivered.

In a separate case, Kairo is accused of obtaining Ksh.2.9 million from Dona Ayalo Okoth last July, claiming he could facilitate the importation of a Subaru Outback. Despite full payment, the vehicle has yet to be delivered.

During a hearing on January 13, the prosecution opposed granting bail, arguing that Kairo poses a significant flight risk. Investigating officer Esther Mburu cited his arrest three days prior, claiming his actions suggest a deliberate pattern of deception.

The prosecution added that Kairo had purchased an airline ticket on January 10, 2025, for a flight to New York scheduled on January 12, just a day after his arrest. This raised concerns that he intended to evade justice.

Police revealed that Kairo was apprehended on January 11 after failing to convince one of his victims that his trip to New York was to secure funds to settle the matter. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
