Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has defended his recent political stance, which has caused friction with some leaders in the Kenya Kwanza coalition and the Central region.
Speaking on Friday at the commissioning of new classrooms at Highway Manyatta Primary School in Ruai, Gachagua explained that his shift in political beliefs regarding Mt. Kenya leadership and the ‘one man, one vote, one shilling’ narrative reflects the needs of his constituents rather than his personal agenda.
Gachagua emphasized that he acts as a spokesperson for his people, asserting that his current political positions and seemingly unpopular beliefs are driven by the voices of those he represents.

“I have no voice of my own in Kenya. I listen to the ground, and what I say reflects what the ground is saying. As Rigathi Gachagua, I don’t have my own stance; I speak on behalf of many people behind me who inform my position,” he stated.
The Deputy President also admonished elected leaders, warning them against neglecting their constituents and the general populace.
In a thinly veiled critique, Gachagua accused leaders of enriching themselves and later dismissing the concerns of ordinary Kenyans.
These remarks come after weeks of tension between Gachagua and President William Ruto, with the latter and his allies accusing the Deputy President of fostering national disunity through tribal politics.
Gachagua has been a vocal advocate for Mt. Kenya unity and the implementation of the contentious ‘one man, one vote, one shilling’ revenue-sharing formula.
