Gachagua Clarifies Political Shift, Stirring Tensions Among Ruto’s Allies

In a hurry? Here’s a quick summary…

  • Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has explained his shift in political beliefs, emphasizing that his stance on unity in Mount Kenya and the ‘one man, one vote, one shilling’ narrative reflects the desires of his constituents, despite opposition from allies of President William Ruto.
  • Gachagua criticized leaders for enriching themselves at the expense of citizens and called for greater respect for the public, amid a growing conflict with President Ruto that threatens to divide the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has explained his sudden shift in political beliefs, which has put him at odds with Kenya Kwanza leaders allied with President William Ruto.

Gachagua clarified that his stance on various issues, which he has spoken about boldly, is driven by the needs of his constituents.

Speaking on Friday at the commissioning of new classrooms at Highway Manyatta Primary School in Ruai, Gachagua stated that he is merely articulating the views of his people.

He emphasized that his calls for unity in the Mount Kenya region and the ‘one man, one vote, one shilling’ narrative reflect the desires of his voters, despite facing opposition from some politicians allied with President Ruto.

“I have no personal voice in Kenya. I listen to the ground; if you hear me take a stand, it is the voice of the people. I, Rigathi Gachagua, do not speak for myself; I speak on behalf of many who support that stance,” he said.

Gachagua warned elected and appointed leaders not to underestimate Kenyans. He criticized some leaders for enriching themselves and then showing disdain for the public once their own needs are satisfied.

“I want to urge all leaders in Kenya to stop insulting citizens. Stop overeating and then disrespecting those who have nothing. Even if they have nothing to eat, at least respect them,” Gachagua asserted.

His remarks come amid an ongoing war of words between him and President William Ruto, with elected leaders taking sides in a conflict that threatens to divide the Kenya Kwanza administration if left unaddressed.

Gachagua has been vocal about promoting unity in the Mount Kenya region, clarifying that his efforts are not meant to unite leaders against anyone but rather to foster regional solidarity.

However, leaders allied with President Ruto have dismissed his stance, suggesting that he should focus on national unity rather than regional concerns.
