Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has brought to light the involvement of certain politicians and businessmen in the drug trade along the coast.

Addressing attendees at a fundraising event in Malindi on Thursday, April 4, the Deputy President underscored that these drug barons had amassed significant wealth through illicit means.

Gachagua emphasized the detrimental impact of the drug trade, particularly on the youth, who are disproportionately affected by addiction, while the perpetrators profit immensely.

Gachagua conveyed the government’s intensified efforts in combating drug-related activities, warning that those involved will face consequences in due time.

Expressing moral indignation, he condemned the exploitation of vulnerable individuals for profit, urging collective action from residents and religious groups alongside government initiatives.

While urging regional leaders to take a stand against the menace, Gachagua refrained from naming specific individuals involved.

The government’s nationwide crackdown on alcohol and drug abuse, initiated on March 6, was reiterated during the meeting led by Gachagua and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithiure Kindiki. 

They emphasized the gravity of the situation, equating perpetrators with terrorists due to the threat they pose to national security and the country’s future.
