In a hurry? Here’s a quick summary…
- National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah dismissed Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s claims of an impeachment plot, calling it a tactic to incite Mt. Kenya residents for sympathy.
- Ichung’wah suggested Gachagua’s focus is on personal political ambitions, hinting at a potential 2027 presidential bid, instead of addressing national issues.
National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has dismissed Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s claims of an impeachment plot against him, calling it a mere sympathy-seeking gimmick.
Speaking after attending the burial of his family friend and former employee, George Owiro, in Pap Nyadiel village, Alego Usonga Constituency, Ichung’wah suggested that Gachagua’s remarks were aimed at inciting residents of the Mt. Kenya region against their Members of Parliament (MPs).
He warned Kenyans to be cautious of the Deputy President’s intentions, stating that Gachagua could be trying to create political instability if things do not go his way.

“As the Leader of Majority, I can assure you that there has never been any plan to impeach him,” Ichung’wah stated.
“That narrative is a creation of those around him, designed to garner sympathy and incite the people of the Mt. Kenya region against their MPs.”
He further accused Gachagua of issuing veiled threats, noting that the DP’s warning of political instability in the event of an impeachment motion was a deliberate attempt to frighten Kenyans.
Despite Gachagua’s claims, Ichung’wah pointed out that no MP has proposed an impeachment motion against the Deputy President.
He emphasized that while any MP has the right to introduce such a motion against any public official, including the President or Cabinet Secretaries, no such move has been made.
He speculated that the DP might be attempting to manipulate public opinion or incite divisions for his own political gain.
Ichung’wah went on to suggest that Gachagua’s ultimate goal might be to vie for the presidency in the 2027 elections, accusing him of focusing on personal ambitions rather than national interests.
“While Gachagua has not openly declared his candidacy for 2027, all signs indicate that he intends to run for president. I hear he wants to align himself with figures like Kalonzo and Wajackoyah. He’s free to do so, but what we need from him is a focus on delivering the government’s manifesto,” Ichung’wah said.
The Kikuyu MP also highlighted the importance of the Nyahururu declaration, where over 69 MPs chose Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to serve as their link with the Executive.
Ichung’wah stressed that Kindiki plays a crucial role in coordinating development projects in the region.
In his remarks, Ichung’wah urged Gachagua to focus on promoting the government’s agenda instead of using media platforms to voice personal grievances.
“What I would have expected from the DP is more focus on national issues. In the past two years, he has not addressed critical matters on national media. How I wish he would spend time discussing people-centric issues instead of engaging us in selfish and parochial conversations,” he added.
During a live interview on Citizen TV, Gachagua called on President William Ruto to protect him from what he described as constant attacks from allies of the President, reminding him of a promise made during the 2022 campaign season.
Leaders like Ichung’wah, however, have continued to question the Deputy President’s suitability as the country’s second-in-command, making sharp criticisms of his actions and leadership style.
