The Israeli military has announced that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was killed in an operation carried out by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in southern Gaza on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

In a statement, the IDF confirmed that Sinwar was eliminated after a year-long pursuit led by soldiers from the Southern Command.

The military detailed how operations by both the IDF and the Shin Bet internal security agency over the past year had restricted Sinwar’s movements, eventually leading to his elimination.

In the same operation, IDF soldiers also identified and killed three other terrorists, confirming Sinwar’s death after a thorough identification process.

Israel accuses Sinwar, 61, of orchestrating the deadly October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which resulted in over 1,200 civilian deaths.

He had recently replaced Hamas’s former chief, Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Iran earlier this year.

The ongoing conflict, triggered by Hamas’s attack last year, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides.

Israel’s military offensive in Gaza has led to the deaths of over 42,000 people, most of them civilians, according to reports from Gaza’s health ministry, with the figures being acknowledged as reliable by the UN.
