Job Summary:

The Anesthetist’s job is to monitor, evaluate, oversee, and provide a continual assessment of the patient’s care before, during and after surgery, to prepare reports, and to participate in research in the area of specialization.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Schedule and maintain use of surgical suites, including operating, wash-up, waiting rooms, and anesthetic and sterilizing equipment.
  • Review patients’ medical histories and records in order to determine anesthesia procedure before surgical operations and other medical procedures in the anesthesia centers of the hospital.
  • Prepare patients for surgical operations and other medical procedures as required in the surgical theatres.
  • Examine patient medical history and records and use diagnostic results to determine risk related to surgical operations and other medical procedures.
  • Administer anesthesia to patients in order to prepare them for surgical operations and other surgical procedures in the anesthesia centers.
  • Administer anesthesia or sedation during medical procedures, using local, intravenous, spinal, or caudal methods.
  • Collaborate with other medical professionals to determine type and method of anesthesia or sedation to render patient insensible to pain.
  • Monitor patients before, during, and after anesthesia and counteract adverse reactions or complications in the anesthesia centers.
  • Record type and amount of anesthesia and patient condition throughout surgical operations and other medical procedure in the surgical theatres.
  • Provide and maintain life support and airway management and help prepare patients for emergency surgery.
  • Determine when patients have recovered or stabilized enough to be moved from the recovery room or ward or to be discharged following outpatient surgical procedures.
  • Provide clinical research and training to students in the anesthesia unit.
  • Guide and mentor junior anesthesia staff, interns, and students in the anesthesia centers.
  • Provide consultative care for critically ill patients in the ICU or HDU or telemetry units.
  • Provide consultative care for inpatients or outpatients regarding pain management.
  • Safe-guard hospital’s and patients’ confidential information and property at all times.
  • Perform any other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgical Services or his/her designate, depending on the need and urgency.
  • Promote effective interpersonal and public relations with team.
  • Display Christ-like attitude and character both on and off duty.
  • Abide by the Tenwek Hospital moral code and Kenya medical and dental council regulations.
  • Maintain familiarity with the legal implications of clinical practice and ensure that legal requirements are met.
  • Undergo specialized training in cardiothoracic anesthesia provided by Tenwek Hospital.

Supervision Received From:

  • Primary Supervisor: Cardiac anesthesiologist
  • Secondary supervisor: Director of Cardiothoracic Surgical Services or his/her designate (Primary Supervisor)

Supervision Given To:

Junior anesthesia staff, anesthesia assistants, anesthesia students, nurses in ciritical care units
Qualifications

  • Committed Christian
  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in nursing (for KRNA) and Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery (For CRNA)
  • Higher Diploma in Anaesthesia (for CO anaesthetist)
  • Registration with the Kenya Nursing council (KRNA) or Clinical Officer council (for CRNA)
  • Have a valid practicing license
    BLS, ACLS Certified
