Court Adjourns Jowie Irungu’s Sentencing to March Wednesday 13

Lady Justice Grace Nzioka has decided to delay the sentencing of Joseph Irungu, also known as Jowie, who was convicted of the murder of Nairobi businesswoman Monica Kimani.

The decision stems from the tardy submission of documents by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the victim’s family, and Jowie’s legal representative.

Justice Nzioka explained that the ODPP submitted its pre-sentencing report yesterday, while the victim’s family filed their submissions on Friday morning. Consequently, Jowie’s defense team lacked adequate time to review and respond to these submissions.

In light of this, Jowie’s lawyers have requested additional time to thoroughly examine the submissions and prepare their responses.

Justice Nzioka has granted their request, setting a deadline for all submissions to be filed by the end of Monday, March 11.

The sentencing of Jowie is rescheduled for Wednesday, March 13.

Acknowledging her role in the proceedings, Justice Nzioka expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the adjournment. She emphasized the importance of bringing the matter to a definitive conclusion on the scheduled judgment day.

The Case

Jowie was found guilty of the murder of Monica Kimani, which occurred on September 19, 2018.

In a ruling delivered on February 9, 2024, Justice Grace Nzioka determined that the prosecution had convincingly established Jowie’s guilt in the crime.

The judge highlighted various factors contributing to Jowie’s guilt, notably his actions before and after the murder. It was revealed that Jowie used someone else’s identity card to gain access to Kimani’s apartment on the day of the crime, indicating premeditation.

Additionally, Jowie was the last person seen with the victim before her death. Applying the Doctrine of Last Seen, Justice Nzioka inferred Jowie’s responsibility for the murder, requiring him to provide an explanation.

Furthermore, forensic analysis confirmed the presence of the victim’s blood on Jowie’s clothing.

Jowie’s former fiancée, former Citizen TV anchor Jacque Maribe, was also charged in connection with the murder but was acquitted.
