The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced on Friday that Kenyan athlete Emmaculate Anyango has been suspended indefinitely due to alleged doping.

Anyango, the world’s second-fastest female in 10,000 km races, tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone, a substance known for enhancing muscle size, strength, and endurance.

According to the AIU’s statement, Anyango’s suspension will remain in effect until her case is fully heard and determined. If found guilty, she faces a four-year ban. Testosterone not only boosts muscle growth but also reduces fat mass, speeds up recovery, and increases aerobic endurance, making it a powerful performance-enhancing drug.

The athlete, who hails from Kericho County, has achieved significant success locally and internationally.

She won a silver medal at the 2019 Under-21 African Championship in Abidjan and secured victories in major events like the Discovery Kenya Cross Country Championship and the Meeting Gala Fernanda Ribeiro in Portugal.

Earlier this year, Anyango became the second woman to run a 10 km race in under 29 minutes at the Valencia Ibercaja competition.

This suspension is a significant setback for the rising star, who had been making waves globally.

However, Anyango now joins a growing list of Kenyan athletes suspended by AIU for doping violations. In June, the AIU banned four Kenyan athletes – Sophy Jepchirchir, Ibrahim Wachira, Elias Kemei, and Nicholas Kosimbei – for varying periods after they were found guilty of using prohibited substances.

The AIU’s continued crackdown highlights the agency’s commitment to maintaining clean sport, but the suspension of prominent athletes like Anyango is a blow to Kenya’s reputation in athletics.
