The Kenyan athletics community is mourning the sudden death of 20-year-old athlete Willy Chelewa, who collapsed and died on Monday at a hotel in Elgeyo Marakwet.

Chelewa’s death occurred just days after he secured a sponsorship deal with a Chinese company to participate in international races, which was expected to be a major milestone in his career.

Chelewa had been staying at a local hotel while training with fellow athletes in the area. According to witnesses, he collapsed shortly after sipping a cup of black tea.

Local authorities, including Elgeyo Marakwet police commander Peter Mulinge, confirmed that Chelewa had just finished his meal of rice and tea before losing consciousness at the hotel in Kaptagat, an area known for its athletic training camps.

Chelewa’s family and the athletics community are devastated, calling for a thorough investigation to uncover the truth behind his untimely passing.

Chelewa recently competed in the half-marathon at the Nairobi City Marathon, finishing in 67th place.

His recent sponsorship deal was seen as a breakthrough, providing him the opportunity to compete internationally and advance in his career.

While Chelewa’s death is not linked to violence, the mysterious nature of his passing has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of Kenyan athletes, both personally and professionally.
