In a hurry? Here’s a quick summary…
- Deputy President Gachagua is hospitalized with chest pains, prompting his lawyer to request a Senate hearing postponement.
- The National Assembly opposes the delay, suggesting the trial proceed using existing evidence.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been admitted to Karen Hospital and will not be able to attend the Senate hearing.
His senior counsel, Paul Muite, revealed that doctors at the hospital reported Gachagua is suffering from intense chest pains and requires complete rest.
Due to his condition, Gachagua was unable to communicate directly with his lawyer. Muite, acting on behalf of the Deputy President, requested the Senate to postpone the hearing until Tuesday, October 22, 2024, to allow time for his recovery.
“I was informed by his doctors that he is experiencing severe chest pains and must rest,” Muite explained.

However, the legal team representing the National Assembly opposed the request for postponement.
Lawyers Eric Gumbo and James Orengo argued that the Senate could explore other options besides Gachagua’s physical presence. They also pointed out the uncertainty of his recovery by the suggested date.
The National Assembly urged the Senate to proceed with the impeachment trial using the evidence already presented in court.
