Minibus Driver Veers Into a River in Kibwezi While Escaping NTSA Officials

Reports have surfaced detailing the circumstances surrounding the minibus that careened into a river on Wednesday, April 10th, in Makueni County, suggesting it was attempting to evade a crackdown by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Allegations indicate that the driver opted to flee down an unfamiliar, untarmacked road after NTSA officials established a checkpoint in Salama along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway. 

The NTSA presence in the region aimed to apprehend motorists operating vehicles deemed unroadworthy.

In the midst of evading the NTSA officials, the driver, carrying 46 passengers in the minibus, lost control of the vehicle, resulting in it plunging into a nearby river.

Following the incident, security officials from the area confirmed that seven individuals sustained injuries in the avoidable accident. They were promptly transported to Sultan Hamud Hospital for medical attention.

Responding police officers noted that fortunately, no fatalities were reported at the scene. 

Subsequently, the driver of the minibus was arrested and is slated to appear in court on Thursday, April 11th.

This accident unfolded just days after a separate tragedy in Makueni County, where 10 lives were lost in a collision involving five vehicles. 

Strikingly, this incident occurred in Salama, the very location where NTSA officials were stationed. 

Over 17 individuals injured in that incident were also rushed to Sultan Hamud Hospital, the same facility where those involved in Wednesday’s accident were treated.

Both accidents have been attributed to negligent driving by law enforcement officials. 

According to NTSA data, a staggering 7,198 Kenyans have been involved in road accidents within the first three months of 2024.
