Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen made an announcement on Wednesday, April 3, revealing the national government’s plans to elevate Matulo Airstrip in Bungoma to the status of an airport.

During his visit to the county, CS Kipchumba elaborated on the project’s aim, emphasizing its role in improving transportation of people and goods within the region.

Addressing the benefits for local residents, Murkomen highlighted job opportunities and business prospects that would emerge during the construction phase.

He outlined the expansion plan, mentioning the extension of the runway to 1.2 kilometers of tarmac along with the construction of a terminal building.

Simultaneously, Tourism CS Alfred Mutua urged CS Murkomen to consider similar enhancements in Voi, Taita Taveta County, particularly focusing on the Ikanga Airfield.

Assuring the residents of Taita Taveta, Mutua pledged to collaborate with the Ministry of Transport to expedite the improvements at the Ikanga Airfield.

The establishment of a new airport forms part of the array of projects promised by Murkomen for the Western region. Under President William Ruto’s administration, Murkomen disclosed plans for the construction of over 600 kilometers of roads in the area.

He emphasized the importance of robust infrastructure in fostering commerce, tourism, agriculture, production, and extractive industries.

The road network expansion will involve upgrading existing roads to bitumen standards, alongside the installation of drainage systems and walkways.

Murkomen stated that the construction of 336 kilometers of roads would be overseen by his Ministry, facilitated through the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), and Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERRA).
