Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has raised concerns about Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s treatment within the Kenya Kwanza government, alleging mistreatment and diminishing trust in President William Ruto from the Mt. Kenya region.

Kahiga claims that Gachagua was recently denied access to a helicopter for an official function, highlighting this as one of the issues contributing to the tension between Ruto and Gachagua.

Speaking on Inooro FM on Tuesday, May 21, Kahiga pointed out that President Ruto publicly contradicted his deputy regarding shareholding in the government. This contradiction, Kahiga said, is a clear sign of discord.

He recounted that when the president visited Nyanza, he dismissed Gachagua’s shareholding remarks as primitive, to which Kahiga responded by challenging Ruto to repeat those remarks in Mt. Kenya.

According to Kahiga, the discussion on shareholding originated from Gachagua based on an agreement with Ruto.

Another point of contention is the truce between Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga. Kahiga, a close ally of Gachagua, claimed that the deputy president was kept in the dark about the deal between the president and the opposition leader.

He mentioned rumors suggesting that Gachagua was allegedly setting traps in State House to prevent Raila from gaining entry, yet he was unaware of how Raila managed to access the State House.

Additionally, Kahiga accused certain government operatives of denying Gachagua a helicopter for official duties, stating that Gachagua is facing numerous challenges within the government but has not fully disclosed them to his allies.

Kahiga emphasized that the Mt. Kenya region is losing trust in Ruto due to the perceived mistreatment of Gachagua.

“There are stories of him being denied a helicopter, and I know there are other issues he hasn’t shared with us. We can see something is wrong,” Kahiga said.

He added that their initial support for Ruto was built on trust, which now seems to be eroding.

Meanwhile, lawyer Makau Mutua cautioned Gachagua against engaging in infighting with President Ruto.

In a statement on Tuesday, May 21, Makau suggested that while Gachagua might feel tempted to clash with Ruto, he would ultimately lose the battle.

The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party spokesperson advised Gachagua to avoid repeating Ruto’s past confrontations with retired President Uhuru Kenyatta during the previous administration.
