Police in Nairobi intensified security measures on Thursday, tightening their vigilance across all routes leading to the City’s Central Business District (CBD) in a bid to deter protesters ahead of the anticipated ‘Nane Nane’ demonstrations.
Barricades were erected on major roads, as seen in images and footage obtained by Citizen Digital, to prevent protesters from accessing the CBD.
From Mombasa Road to Thika Road and Jogoo Road, armed police officers set up roadblocks where vehicles were inspected, with some being denied entry into the CBD, including public service vehicles (PSVs).
On Mombasa Road, a roadblock was established at the GM roundabout, while officers at the Bunyala Roundabout blocked motorists, preventing them from entering the city center.
Along Jogoo Road, police patrolled various sections, with a roadblock set up on Manyanja Road to prevent youths from leaving Kayole Estate.

Juja Road, which connects to Thika Road, was blocked for most of the day, with no matatus allowed towards the city center.
Inside the CBD, police officers were seen clearing the area as businesses closed down and PSVs left the area.
Tensions remained high throughout Thursday, with police using teargas to disperse protesters and making more arrests as the demonstrations continued.
Acting police chief Gilbert Masengeli had warned on Wednesday that “criminals” intended to infiltrate the demonstrations, advising the public to avoid protected zones, such as the main international airport and President Ruto’s official residence, and to exercise caution in crowded areas.
