In a thrilling display of athleticism at the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana, Kenya’s Brian Komen showcased remarkable prowess as he surged ahead in the final stretch to clinch victory in the men’s 1,500m event on Friday night. 

Crossing the finish line in an impressive time of 3:39:19, Komen secured the gold medal, with Ethiopia’s Shire Ermias and another Kenyan, Abel Kipsang, claiming second and third place, respectively.

In the women’s 1,500m final, Kenya’s Mary Ekiru secured the bronze medal with a time of 4:06.22, as Ethiopians Mero Hirut Meshesha and Kumsa Hawi Abera seized the top two spots.

Adding to Kenya’s medal tally, Nancy Jepleting secured another bronze in the women’s half marathon, clocking 1:15:07, with South Sudan’s Atalena Loliha clinching gold and Ethiopia’s Zewditu Aderaw taking silver.

Meanwhile, Edwin Okong’o made history by clinching the eighth gold medal for Kenya in the boxing arena, triumphing over Algerian Yassin Elouarz in the middleweight 75kgs category final. Okong’o’s victory marks Kenya’s first boxing gold at the African Games since 2007.

As the competition enters its final stages, Kenya’s hopes rest on the shoulders of the national men’s volleyball team, Wafalme Stars, set to face off against Egypt. 

Similarly, the women’s team, Malkia Strikers, seeks redemption as they prepare to battle hosts Ghana for the bronze medal.
