- The Senate will hold plenary sessions on October 16 and 17 to deliberate the impeachment case.
All Senators and Senate staff have been temporarily banned from international travel as the Senate prepares to address the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In a notice to Senators, Speaker Amason Kingi also ordered Senate committees to halt any activities planned outside Nairobi until Saturday, October 19, 2024.
“As you are aware, the Senate has substantive upcoming business for consideration in the coming days. Given the gravity of these matters, it is paramount that we maintain a focused presence in the Senate,” Kingi stated in the notice.
He emphasized that all travel outside the country by Senators and Senate staff has been put on hold, and committees must suspend activities outside Nairobi with immediate effect.

The travel restriction is intended to ensure that Senators remain fully engaged in the impeachment proceedings without distractions. The Senate is expected to make a decision on Deputy President Gachagua’s impeachment within the next 10 days.
This comes after Senate Speaker Kingi received a formal communication from National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, outlining the MPs’ resolution to impeach the Deputy President.
Kingi has instructed the Clerk of the Senate to invite both Gachagua and the mover of the motion to present their cases. The invitations are to be sent by the close of business on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.
Both parties must submit their responses to the clerk’s office by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 14, 2024.
The clerk will then distribute the relevant documents and the plenary hearing program to Senators by the same day.
The Senate will deliberate on the matter in a plenary session scheduled for Wednesday, October 16, and Thursday, October 17.
