Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana has filed a censure motion in the Senate to discuss the conduct of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Mungatana accused Gachagua of breaching constitutional provisions regarding the behavior and conduct expected of a state officer, specifically citing violations of his oath of office.
Mungatana pointed out that, under Article 260 of the Kenyan Constitution, the Deputy President is classified as a state officer and must adhere to the guidelines laid out in Article 75, as well as the leadership and integrity code outlined in the Leadership and Integrity Act.
He argued that Gachagua’s conduct since assuming office has been divisive, creating tensions among Kenyans with inflammatory public statements.

The senator highlighted several instances where Gachagua’s remarks have fueled discontent, particularly concerning employment opportunities in the public sector, resource allocation to devolved units, and inciting a section of the public to disobey directives from certain county governments.
Mungatana believes these actions amount to misconduct and a violation of the Constitution, diminishing the dignity of the Deputy President’s office.
In his motion, Mungatana invoked Senate standing orders to express the House’s displeasure and disappointment with Gachagua’s conduct.
This development has fueled speculation that some leaders may be planning to file an impeachment motion in Parliament.
Tensions between Gachagua and President William Ruto have reportedly grown, with rumors of strained relations.
Gachagua has hinted at being sidelined by Ruto’s inner circle, while the President has remained silent on the matter.
