Kenya’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Francis Omondi Ogolla, is set to be laid to rest today at his home in Mor Village, Siaya County. General Ogolla’s passing marks a somber moment in the country’s history, as he is the first CDF to pass away while in office since Kenya’s independence. 

He tragically lost his life in a plane crash on Thursday, April 18, 2024, in Sindar Area, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The tragic crash also claimed the lives of nine other officers who were traveling with General Ogolla on an official tour of the North Rift region, which has been troubled by banditry. Their mission was part of an effort to address the security challenges in the area.

General Ogolla was appointed as Kenya’s military chief on April 28, 2023, by President William Ruto. 

His appointment was made in accordance with the ‘Tonje Rules,’ a rotational system that guides the selection of the Chief of Defence Forces. 

His loss is deeply felt across the nation, and he will be remembered for his dedication and service to the country.
