- Families in Mombasa seek justice after two men, Denis Otieno and Joash Ombati, were killed during protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
- Otieno’s family disputes his involvement in the protests, while Ombati’s widow calls for support and justice, prompting calls for compensation and action from President William Ruto.
Two families are seeking justice following the deaths of their relatives during protests against the Finance Bill 2024 in Mombasa.
Denis Otieno was discovered with three gunshot wounds, though his family insists he was not part of the protesters that day.
After searching for over 15 days and receiving news of his death via social media, his mother Coleta Achieng and uncle George Omondi traveled from Kitale to Mombasa to find his body.
“Three gunshot wounds, could one not have killed him? The government must take action,” Mr. Omondi lamented.
The family asserts that the 26-year-old had recently moved to Mombasa for work and was not involved in the demonstrations.

Meanwhile, at the same hospital, Joash Ombati’s family mourns his death at the hands of police.
Traveling from Kisii, they identified his body with a recovered bullet. His wife, Lilian Ombati, expressed devastation:
“He left home to support his family… now I’m told he was shot. I don’t know how our children will live without him.”
Mathias Shipeta of Haki Afrika confirmed that IPOA has taken a bullet found with one of the deceased for investigation.
Mombasa’s security authorities have declined to comment on the incidents. Both families are urging President William Ruto to ensure compensation and justice for all affected by the deaths.
