Two Women Die After Gold Mine Collapses In Siaya

A tragic incident unfolded in Alego-Usonga sub-county, Siaya County, as a gold mine collapse claimed the lives of two women and left five other miners injured. 

Maureen Anyango, 28, and Beryl Atieno, 40, lost their lives on Saturday evening when the mining shaft caved in, burying them alive.

Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo reported that upon arrival at the scene, officers found four other miners trapped under the debris, with Owaga and Consolata Ooko among them.

Fortunately, they were rescued by members of the public and promptly transported to Siaya County Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention. However, tragically, Anyango and Atieno succumbed to their injuries on-site.

Grace Akinyi, Moses Omondi, and George Odhiambo were lucky to escape the collapse unharmed, providing a glimmer of relief amidst the devastation. 

The authorities processed and documented the scene of the accident before transferring the bodies of the deceased miners to Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.

Meanwhile, Joseph Okoth, the owner of the mining site, has been apprehended by law enforcement and is currently assisting with investigations while held in police custody at Kogelo police station.
