Young Athlete Collapses and Dies After 3,000m Race in Uasin Gishu

A young athlete tragically collapsed and died after participating in a scholarship trial at Kipchoge Stadium in Uasin Gishu County. 

According to a police report obtained by Citizen Digital, 20-year-old Joseph Hussein Njagi completed the 3,000-metre race around midday but collapsed at the finish line.

Athletics officials quickly rushed Njagi to Uasin Gishu District Hospital for medical attention. 

Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The officials notified police officers from Eldoret Police Station, who responded by heading to the hospital.

Njagi’s body was later transferred to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

His passing adds to the growing list of young Kenyan athletes whose promising careers ended in tragedy. 

In mid-September 2024, another Kenyan athlete, Willy Chelewa, collapsed and died just days after securing a Chinese sponsorship for international races. Chelewa reportedly passed away moments after drinking a cup of black tea.
